2022-2023 Event Details TBD
Join us for part or all of this weekend clinic, hosted by Trail Labs, featuring Robert May. Rob was the first fat biker I ever saw….before fat biking became wide spread in the east. He has competed at the Iditabike, many regional fat bike races, and is an accomplished severe cold weather bike packer. Rob also runs the Mid-Atlantic Fat Bike Series.
“With more than 20 years of experience racing bikes in extreme cold, I have learned innumerable tricks to staying safe and comfortable in the most unpredictable elements. From experiences as a remote Alaskan fishing guide to 2 trips across the Iditarod Trail, as well as a 3 time Arrowhead competitor, let me save you from the many mistakes I have learned and show you how to have fun in winter.” -Rob May
Rob will walk us through the finer points of keeping your ass warm when its really cold out. No small task. Cold weather clothing ranging from normal cycling and outdoor gear through vapor barriers and more specialized garb. Rob will also touch on what it takes to bivvy in sub freezing temps as well. All this will be followed up with an open Q and A session and then participants can choose to participate in an overnight fat biking trip. Rob is a wealth of knowledge, and this is a great chance to ask someone the questions that come with a harsh learning curve, like “how do you not freeze to death when you are transitioning from riding to camping and back to riding again?” The indoor sessions should last about 3-4 hours (depending on levels of curiosity with the Q’s). The overnight will depart around dark and will wrap up mid day on Sunday. You can expect 3 hours of riding on Saturday evening and 3 hours of riding on Sunday morning. It is very likely that there will be social rides (not formal rides we are “hosting”) headed out during the course of the weekend.
Special Note: If you are considering the Spruce Knob Ultra, this clinic could be considered a required prep event if you do not have experience with cold weather camping, bike packing, and extreme winter riding.
